What Is a UAE Salary Slip (Payslip)?
A salary slip — also known as a payslip or salary certificate — is a document issued by an employer that shows the complete breakdown of an employee’s monthly pay. It lists all earnings (basic salary and allowances) and all deductions (loans, absences, advance repayments) to arrive at the final net salary credited to the employee’s account. In Arabic, a salary slip is known as قسيمة الراتب.
In the UAE, salary slips are required for a wide range of official and personal purposes, including bank loan and credit card applications, tenancy agreements, visa and residency applications for dependents, school admissions, and embassy travel visa applications.
What Purposes Do UAE Salary Slips Serve?
Rental Applications
Most landlords in UAE require 3 months of payslips as proof of income before signing a tenancy contract.
Bank Loans & Credit Cards
UAE banks require 3–6 months of salary slips for personal loans, car loans, and credit card applications.
Dependent Visas
Sponsoring a spouse, children, or parents for UAE residency requires payslips as proof of qualifying salary.
Embassy Visa Applications
Travel visa applications for Schengen, UK, and US commonly require UAE payslips as part of financial documentation.
School Admissions
Some private schools in UAE require income documentation during the admissions process for fee band assessment.
Personal Records
Keeping monthly payslip copies protects you in any future salary dispute, gratuity calculation, or labour complaint.

Every Line of Your UAE Salary Slip Explained
Basic Salary
The fixed monthly amount stated in your employment contract. This is the most important figure on your payslip — it is used to calculate your gratuity, overtime pay, leave salary, and end-of-service benefits. Always check that the basic salary on your payslip matches your employment contract.
Housing Allowance
A monthly contribution towards accommodation costs. In UAE private-sector contracts, housing allowance is typically 20–25% of the total package for expatriate employees. It is shown separately from basic salary and is excluded from gratuity calculations.
Transport Allowance
A monthly contribution towards commuting costs. Standard amounts range from AED 500 to AED 2,000 depending on your role and company. Like housing, transport allowance is excluded from gratuity calculations.
Gross Salary
The total of all earnings before any deductions: Gross = Basic + Housing + Transport + Other Allowances. This is the figure used for bank applications and credit assessments.
Deductions
Common deductions include salary advance repayments, company loan instalments, absence or lateness penalties, and GPSSA contributions for UAE nationals. Employers cannot make deductions without prior written agreement or a documented legal basis.
Net Salary
The amount transferred to your bank account: Net = Gross − Total Deductions. This must match the WPS transfer amount shown on your bank statement.
UAE WPS — Wages Protection System Explained
The Wages Protection System (WPS) is a mandatory electronic salary transfer system introduced by MOHRE to ensure all UAE private-sector employees are paid on time. Employers must transfer salaries via WPS through a registered bank, exchange house, or financial institution — within the first 10 days of each month (or as per the contract).
WPS Salary Delays — What Are Your Rights?
If your salary is delayed beyond 10 days, MOHRE can impose financial fines on your employer. If delayed beyond 30 days, the employer may be banned from issuing new work permits. You can verify your WPS salary status through the MOHRE Smart app or MOHRE website at any time.
Why Basic Salary Split Matters More Than You Think
The split between basic salary and allowances on your payslip directly affects your gratuity, leave pay, and overtime. A contract structured as AED 5,000 basic + AED 7,000 allowances pays significantly less in gratuity than one structured as AED 9,000 basic + AED 3,000 allowances — even if the gross salary is identical at AED 12,000.
| Scenario | Basic Salary | Total Package | Gratuity After 5 Years |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low basic, high allowances | AED 5,000 | AED 12,000 | AED 17,500 |
| High basic, low allowances | AED 9,000 | AED 12,000 | AED 31,500 |
| Difference | — | Identical | AED 14,000 difference |
